"The whole visit, treatment and experience was terrible"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Accident and emergency Pilgrim Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I attended A and E at the Pilgrim hospital in April.  I arrived at exactly 3:00 pm.  After a short wait I was seen by a triage nurse and a doctor who did a rectal examination as i was passing blood in my stools. At the end of March I received a new hip so was still in pain and recovering from this. I asked repeatedly for painkillers which were eventually given around 11:40 that evening.

I was taken to a side room and seen by a further 2 doctors both of whom had different theories.  I was sent back to A and E for another long wait for a bed.

At about 2:00 am I noticed my feet had swollen to twice their size.  I reported this to various staff but nothing was done. Finally,  at 11:50,  I was told there was a bed available.

From there I was transferred to ward 1B and didn't see a doctor at all.  The next morning I was told I was going for an endoscopy and finally a doctor came to see me at about 5:00pm saying the problem was due to my diverticulitis, I was allowed home with promise of a out patients appointment.

I feel that I really need to see my previous consultant.  The whole visit, treatment and experience was terrible and I hope never to have to repeat it.

Dear elainesumm1

We are so very sorry you had such a poor experience within the Emergency Department- your feedback is valid and not something we would want any patient to experience. I can only sincerely apologise for the delay in medications being administered. Should you need to attend the department again- please don’t hesitate to speak to the Nurse in charge to ensure that your concerns are addressed immediately. We hope you are now feeling better.

Kind Regards, Holly Carter- Senior SR ED PHB.

I can honestly say I was traumatised and am really scared of ever having to visit an a and e department again, was made to feel like nothing and in my opinion the hca,s need to be trained how to speak civilly to people instead of trying to be a diva.
