"Maternity journey"

About: Derriford Hospital / Maternity care Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Maternity

(as a service user),

It’s now coming up to the first birthday of my little girl. Last year, i received wonderful care for hyperemesis gravidarum & the midwives, docs & everyone else were wonderful and the open access for treatment was so very much appreciated. Having to be induced at 37weeks due to pre-eclampsia I was swiftly cared for & induced the following day on a fri morning - my little girl finally arrived the Saturday afternoon. She was rapidly care for & intubated after becoming seriously ill. The care continued, the tea & toast was magic but we hadn’t realised how poorly babes was at this point. Within 6hrs we were informed that a paediatric  consultant team were coming from derriford that night & we were rapidly transferred to derriford for cooling therapy in their neonatal intensive care unit… their care was impeccable, to both myself & my little girl.

Once transferred back to treliske we stayed on wheal fortune and again the midwives and MHCA’s were fabulous and helped us as needed. Since this we also met a couple of lovely doctors for jaundice tests and also the paediatric outpatient department who were brilliant and even noticed my anxiety and were so caring and kind.

The perinatal mental health team (Lisa, Sue, Nat and Dr mackintosh) & the outreach MBU service (Richard) have been nothing short of amazing and I’ll be forever grateful for the help, care and support in this first year. These guys don’t get the recognition that they deserve.

Thank you to everyone who was part of our traumatic journey (I’ve prob forgotten to mention many others).

Thank you so much for taking time to share with us your positive pregnancy, birth and postnatal experience.

I can imagine that facing so many challenges was really very worrying for you so I am incredibly pleased to know that during you whole journey, you and your baby received such wonderful care and support.

I will ensure that your feedback is shared with the obstetric, maternity and neonatal team as I know it will mean a lot to them.

Happy Birthday to your daughter, I hope you have a wonderful day celebrating her and also yourself on your 'birth' day.

Thank you so very much for your lovely email letting us know that after such a traumatic start to her life your daughter is approaching her 1st birthday. Your daughter's journey over her first week must have been truly stressful but I’m delighted that you have such positive experiences of all the services involved; Truro Local Neonatal Unit and Maternity Services, Peninsula Neonatal Transport Service and Plymouth Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I have shared your email with both teams based here at University Hospital Plymouth as your comments will mean a great deal to all those involved in caring for your daughter.

Hoping the celebrations for your daughter go well and wishing you all good health.

Kind regards

Katie Hoffman

Interim Matron for Neonatal and Acute Paediatric Services.
