"Appalling treatment"

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital

I never slate the NHS but sometimes something just needs to be said.

Who discharges an 83 year old woman at midnight.

Mum has always been 100% independently mobile. On Tuesday she had major spinal surgery at Chorley hospital, was discharged Wednesday with no pain relief or care plan? Suddenly Thursday cannot walk due to pain levels and other issue's. Advised by GP to just keep up with the paracetamol !!!!!!!!!

She was in so much pain, unable to walk, & had leg swelling an ambulance was called resulting in her going to A&E at Blackpool Victoria with suspected DVT. She was then left on a trolley in A&E until till 23.30 from 5.30am (no visitors allowed so on her own) no attempt to mobilise her was made 1 sandwich given in all that time at one point she was going to be sent for an MRI scan until it dawned on them she has metal clips closing the wound site on her back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!. The staff insisted mum was 4 weeks post-op she was 4 days, its a good job shes an intelligent woman, they just assumed as she's 83 that she was confused...

16 hours after arriving in A&E at 10pm advised she's to be admitted to the ward. At 11.30 pm my sister gets a call to collect mum she's being discharged on a couple of tramoldol (even though morphine isn't touching the pain)

Continuity of Care, Communication, Empathy, Dignity none of these were taken into consideration. Shame on this department hopefully this isnt a reflection on tne rest of the hospital

We are fuming and absolutely disgusted.

Thank you for sharing your mothers experience. I am sorry she had such a long and uncomfortable wait in our Emergency department. The Department is now permitting one visitor per patient for the duration of the patient’s time there. For patients who are deemed vulnerable or have caring requirements, this can be increased.

I am sorry these changes were not in place at the time of your mothers visit and she was on her own, especially when she was discharged late at night. I can imagine how frustrated both she and your family must have felt, and I am grateful you have brought this matter to our attention.

Please could you contact our Patient and Family Relations Team with your mothers personal details, and the date of her visit so we can look into this further. They can be reached on 01253 955588 / bfwh.patientrelations@nhs.net.

I hope your mother has recovered now from her surgery and her pain levels have improved.

Kind regards

Eleanor
