My daughter was admitted to QMC for a second overdose in 12 months. She has also self harmed for over 2 years. Whilst care at QMC was very good, I found the CAMHS crisis team to be poor. It added nothing to the discharge other than a longer wait. We took nothing useful away from their input. The follow-up was 2 weeks after the overdose and because my daughter didn’t want to engage with counselling, the nurse said there wasn’t anything else they could do other than signpost me to websites. I was advised to lock away meds and sharp objects. My daughter was keen to try medication to stabilise her moods but she was told that this won’t solve her problems, it will only numb them and I was told that team didn’t prescribe anyway. If I wanted to go down the medication route then I needed to google SPA and do the referral myself - which apparently went to another area of CAMHS. So much for a single point of access. I’ve done this but have heard nothing back. It is an absolute joke and a complete waste of time. In my opinion, children are being failed on a massive level. The service did absolutely nothing for a clearly mentally unwell child. What more does someone need to do to get proper mental health care if overdosing on paracetamol doesn’t qualify?
