"Gobsmacked at the treatment my daughter has received"

About: Barnet Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter attended hospital A&E department where an xray was taken of her ankle.  No fracture was highlighted at the time.  She was referred to fracture clinic at Barnet who said they would call her for an appointment.  When I called the fracture clinic 3 days later they informed me that my daughter had missed her appointment.  What appointment?  My daughter had not received a phone call or email inviting her to attend.

I was then told that an appointment had been re arranged for the end of April a whole 5 weeks after the injury occurred. She has since twice been turned away from A&E saying she has to wait for her appointment at the fracture clinic.

My daughter's ankle showed no sign of improvements and a deep red bruising still covered part of her ankle so I decided to send her to see a Senior physiotherapist at a private practice.  They said she had a ruptured a ligament in her ankle and also Ottowa ankle fracture.  We were advised to seek a x-ray of her ankle front section.  She presented again to A&E and was again refused an x-ray and told to wait for her appointment at the fracture clinic.  My daughters ankle is sitting at an awkward angle which means the boot they supplied for her to wear does not fit as she cannot place her foot flat.  It  sits as if she is on tip toes which we fear will respectively cause further damage.

I am appalled at the level of negativity my daughter has received and for her to just be fobbed off time and time again. I feel bad as I write this because I know the NHS do an amazing job every single day but I'm gobsmacked at the treatment my daughter has received.  Hopefully she will have no long standing complications with her ankle injury.

Dear reviewer,

Firstly, our apologies for the delay in responding to your comment; our team has recently taken over responding to these comments and we are in the process of working through them. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your experience with our emergency department and fracture clinic, though we are very sorry to read that you and your daughter have had such a poor experience, where you were told you'd missed an appointment in the fracture clinic that you'd not been told about and were then informed you'd have to wait a long time for another appointment. Equally we apologise that this meant you had to seek a private assessment of your daughter's ankle. This is certainly not the experience we would want or expect for our patients and would encourage you to please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) so this can be looked into further. PALS can be contacted by email bcfpals@nhs.net or telephone 0208 216 4924. Again, we apologise for your poor experience and wish your daughter all the best in her recovery. The Patient Experience team.
