"Feeling abandoned in A&E"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Accident and emergency South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance

(as a service user),

My mother who's 72 came into A&E, brought in by us as no ambulance available. She had paralysis on left leg and loss of bladder control and balance, and was left sitting in a chair in A&E for 23 hours. She did have blood test and a ct scan while she was waiting but was told no beds available, me and my dad had to hoist her to the toilet as nobody else offered to help and after spending the night sat in one position which can't be good for blood clots she was almost delirous. So although I understand hospitals are overwhelmed and understaffed I find this treatment of patients unacceptable , where is the duty of care ? It was one of the most traumatic things I have been through seeing my mum so vulnerable and there was nothing I could do to help.

Dear julycm69

I’m extremely saddened to read your raised concern. Firstly, Thankyou for taking the time to provide some feedback- we appreciate all feedback both good and bad. I sincerely apologise that your mother was waiting for so long- the long waits patients are experiencing are not ideal or believed by any of us to be acceptable. Please accept our deepest apologies for your mothers ED experience- it’s not something I would want any patient to experience. I hope your mother is now feeling better.

Kind Regards, Holly Carter (Senior Sister, PHB ED).

Update posted by julycm69 (a service user)

It turns out she has had a stroke which may have could have been detected 48 hours earlier if not for the waiting times. Thank you for your apologies, I know the staff are doing there best with what they have.

Good Morning julycm69,

Firstly, I am sorry the experience you had has been negative, thank you for taking the time to send us your feedback. I note that the location of this incident was Lincolnshire and so unfortunately I cannot progress this as a complaint for the South Western Ambulance Service.

Please accept my sincere apologies, if you would like to contact East Midlands Ambulance Service, please email them at pals.office@emas.nhs.uk or call 0333 012 4216.

I hope your mother is feeling better soon,

Dee
