"Carers at home"

About: Older People Community Services / Home Care

(as the patient),

I have carers to help me get washed and dressed. They have to use a hoist. Recently they sent two new carers together and they did not know what they were doing at all. I know they have to learn but they were dangerous and when they finally managed to get my electric wheelchair working, I almost ran them over.

Please do not send new carers together. At least one experienced person that knows me and my care needs is required. Another male carer also visits me and I find this really embarrassing and I don’t like him helping with my personal care. He is also untidy and doesn’t clean up after himself. I cannot reach to clean up after him when he makes a drink and food.

Another nurse made me cry,.  They said I had gained weight and that it was my own fault and was quite nasty about it and it really upset me. I have a lot of health issues and unfortunately I need the care package provided but it shouldn’t upset me in my own home. Please think about which carers you are sending out and the person they are visiting.

Dear Cepheusne37

Thank-you for taking the time to provide feedback about your care. I am sorry to read about the difficult experiences that you have had. Our goal is to provide the same carers as often as we can, as we know that this is preferable and safer for service users and staff. Unfortunately with the current pressures of sickness absence, unfamiliar staff are having to be sent to calls to make sure people receive their care. With regards to male carers, if a service user asks that a male carer is not sent then we work hard to ensure that this is the case. However again with staffing pressures this does happen on occasion. I was very sorry to read that a staff member made you cry and this does not meet the standard of care that we expect of staff. I apologise on behalf of the service that this happened.

As a service it is important that we listen and learn from your experience. I will make sure your feedback is shared with colleagues and staff. If you would like to contact me directly to discuss your care you can reach me a clodagh.obrien@belfasttrust.hscni.net or 028 9504 9309.

Regards

Clodagh O'Brien
