"My mother’s care in hospital after a cerebral haemorrhage / stoke"

About: Northern General Hospital / Accident and emergency Royal Hallamshire Hospital / General medicine

(as a carer),

My mother, aged 92, had a cerebral haemorrhage and stroke and after visiting the A/E Department at Northern General, she was admitted to HASU on L2 at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital , then moved to the Stroke Unit on Q2 .She died there 10 days later .

From the start I was able to be with her all the time and the nursing and medical staff kept me informed and explained very gently what had happened and what was likely to happen next . On Q2, every member of staff - nursing, medical, domestic , healthcare support, therapists - they were all very kind and thoughtful with us both , even though they were under immense pressures .They also allowed both my daughters , who travelled from Bristol and Hastings , to see Mum and made them very welcome .I felt I could trust the staff to care for her and this allowed me to concentrate on her , to say the things we’d never said  and have a lot of laughs .I cannot begin to tell them how much difference this has made to me and our family .
