"My Sons visit to A&E"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

My Son had injured his arm playing rugby. After initially being assessed in our local surgery we headed to A&E as it didn’t look like good news.

He was in considerable pain & we had so much going on at home on top of that so it was really stressful. It was difficult to say the least & we were both dreading the wait as we knew it would be long, especially now that our local minor injuries unit has been shut.

I can honestly say that whilst we did wait, it was clearly noted at reception how long we may be having to wait & the team booking us in were calm & friendly. They listened to my difficult predicament but I was mindful that there was little they could do to expedite the triage.

Every single person we saw was friendly & helpful whilst doing what must be one of the most pressured jobs there is.

We were out in slightly less than the ‘advertised’ wait time of 3-4hrs which was a bonus.

I was extremely impressed with it all.

There was only one aspect of concern & it wasn’t to do with patient care or wait times but I feel it needs raising. Whilst waiting behind the safety screen in the x-ray room the person sat at the computer left the room. The staff member did not lock her computer screen which I feel could’ve caused a data breach. I simply turned my back on it as it wasn’t for my eyes, but that’s not the point. It’s such a simple thing to lock your screen if you leave your desk. I feel that there needs to be adequate GDPR training within the hospital.

Dear Raspy,

Thank you for taking your time to provide us with your feedback. It is great to hear about your experience with your son. I will ensure that your comments are shared with the whole team here in the Emergency Department.

I have since spoken to the team within Radiology about the locking of computer screens. Both departments will use your experience as a vital reminder on ensuring that all computers are locked when leaving a room even if it is for a very short period of time. We appreciate your feedback and hope that your son is recovering well from his rugby injury.

Take care

Sophie Grills
