"Understanding why I am the way I am"

About: Intellectual Developmental Disabilities /Learning Disability Services - Community / Neurodevelopmental Specialist Service

(as the patient),

I didn't realise adults could have adhd. I thought it was somthing you would have as a kid in primary school that went away as you got older. I didn't realise I could have more trouble doing things than other people I just assumed I was lazy and no good at anything.

I met someone who told me they had an adult diagnosis and when I looked into it I made some connections with my own life.

It was causing me issues with work and relationships I decided to seek help more for my own curiosity than anything else.

I have had several chats with Dr Gillott and have since been diagnosed.

Its nice to know more about who I am. Everyone has been very helpful during what I understand has been a very hard time for everyone. Now we are moving into the next stage where we see what can be done.

Everything has been good.

Thank you so much for your feedback on receiving a diagnosis of ADHD in adulthood within our Service. There are still a lot of myths to bust about ADHD, particularly that common misperception that it is just a childhood condition, especially when it is lifelong for the majority. We can see the impact undiagnosed ADHD can have on work, relationships, and self-esteem as you have described.

I'm pleased you have had a positive experience with NeSS and I really hope the diagnosis leads to positive changes for you going forward.
