"The services I received from staff at Crosshouse hospital."

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Stroke Care

(as a service user),

I was admitted to Crosshouse Hospital after suffering a couple of TIA’s. It was a very scary experience for me as I had no idea what was wrong with me.

On admission to the EDU(?) unit, I had blood taken and an ECG. I was then left waiting for a stroke consultant to come and see me. Sever hours later, I was told there had been a emergency and it was taking longer than normal for someone to see me. I even asked if I could have a drink of water as I had nothing to eat or drink for about 8 hours. I was told I could have nothing until the stroke specialist saw me. I was eventually transferred to a ward with no one coming to see me.

I arrived at ward 3E and the difference in staff attitude was night and day. The staff were so helpful and kind and I was given something to drink and eat. Throughout the time I spent in the ward, each and every one of the staff, from doctors, to nurses, to auxiliary staff to porters were all exceptional. I was given the fullest help and assistance  I could want. I was diagnosed with having had several TIA’s. I had every test imaginable to ensure that everything was investigated. I was discharged on Wednesday and having medication to take and a follow up appointment for further tests.

I can’t thank the staff of 3E enough for everything they did for me. It made a miserable  time for me a bit more bearable.

A big thanks too, to the lovely ladies who ran the waiting/dispatch room and  offered countless cups of tea and coffee and ordered me a taxi to take me home.

I appreciate how stressed and busy the staff are but it’s a shame that some seem less interested in patients than others.. All credit to ward 3E staff. You are brilliant.

Dear Lizzyw,

Thank you for posting your feedback in relation to your care. I am sorry to hear you had such a delay to get your swallow assessed. When you have symptoms of stroke it is important this is undertaken before you are given anything orally. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been not having anything to drink. We aim to review patients rapidly for water swallow test. If you would like to contact me via email christine.somerville@aapct.scot.nhs.uk or 01563 825904 with your details I will review to identify any learning.

It is so nice to read about the positive experience you had when you arrived in the ward. This is what we aim for and I know the team will be delighted to read this. I am glad you were fully investigated and appropriate treatment. I will pass over to the discharge team your feedback.

I hope you are now feeling better and on the road to recovery,

Best Wishes,

Christine and Staff Ward 3E.
