I first got involved with drugs through a previous partner, he was introduced to heroin whilst in prison and afterwards persuaded me to try it. Looking back now I can see how he manipulated me into thinking I had no choice. After a few years, I decided I would try and overcome my addiction but would always find myself backing out of it. This is when I realised it had become a serious problem. I later discovered I had become pregnant and knew I had to make changes for myself and my family.
I have faced many problems because of my drug use, both socially and medically. I have received a lot of judgment from others as well as having social services involved with my family. As a consequence of my addiction 2 of my children were born with NAS (Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome) and this has left me with extreme guilt.
Once I had acknowledged my problem I sought help from CGL as well as discussing my options with a substance misuse midwife. I will be honest and say I felt in the past there wasn’t much help for me from treatment services, however now I can’t complain at all. I am lucky enough to have a great Key Worker who is very supportive of me. I was first introduced to Intuitive Recovery through CGL. My key worker told me about their course and thought they would help me. THEY DID! Since Intuitive Recovery I have now also done Skills Tu Life and Enough’s Enough.
I use the skills I have learnt on a day to day basis. By learning how the brain works and identifying my addictive desires I am able to stop my thoughts from running wild. I also found the SWOT Analysis that was written about me by a 3rd party was a real eye opener in seeing how others perceive me.
After sitting Intuitive Thinking Skills courses I am feeling much more positive in general. I have a new born to add to my family and I am currently 12 weeks drug free. In the future I am planning to reduce my methadone and I feel confident that with the tool I have learned I will be off it by the end of the year.
