"Introduced to Intuitive Recovery"

About: CGL Birmingham

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I first got involved with drugs through a previous partner, he was introduced to heroin whilst in prison and afterwards persuaded me to try it. Looking back now I can see how he manipulated me into thinking I had no choice. After a few years, I decided I would try and overcome my addiction but would always find myself backing out of it. This is when I realised it had become a serious problem. I later discovered I had become pregnant and knew I had to make changes for myself and my family.

I have faced many problems because of my drug use, both socially and medically. I have received a lot of judgment from others as well as having social services involved with my family. As a consequence of my addiction 2 of my children were born with NAS (Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome) and this has left me with extreme guilt.

Once I had acknowledged my problem I sought help from CGL as well as discussing my options with a substance misuse midwife. I will be honest and say I felt in the past there wasn’t much help for me from treatment services, however now I can’t complain at all. I am lucky enough to have a great Key Worker who is very supportive of me. I was first introduced to Intuitive Recovery through CGL. My key worker told me about their course and thought they would help me. THEY DID! Since Intuitive Recovery I have now also done Skills Tu Life and Enough’s Enough.

I use the skills I have learnt on a day to day basis. By learning how the brain works and identifying my addictive desires I am able to stop my thoughts from running wild. I also found the SWOT Analysis that was written about me by a 3rd party was a real eye opener in seeing how others perceive me.

After sitting Intuitive Thinking Skills courses I am feeling much more positive in general. I have a new born to add to my family and I am currently 12 weeks drug free. In the future I am planning to reduce my methadone and I feel confident that with the tool I have learned I will be off it by the end of the year.

Dear Geokw49,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us some nice feedback about Intuitive Thinking Skills and our services. We really appreciate your feedback.

My name is Tasneem, and I'm part of the team that listens and responds to feedback like yours.

Firstly, I'd like to say a thank you for being so honest when talking about your experience with drugs. It takes a lot to talk about the difficult things you described and admitting to previous mistakes you made. I'm really sorry to hear how your addiction to heroin began and that you felt manipulated without realising it at the time. Even though you say it took a few years later, you still took initiative by deciding you needed the help and that in itself was a big step.

You mention some consequences you have faced along the way, with judgement from social services and family but also your children being born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. I'm really sorry to hear this, I can't imagine how you felt during that time but I do hope you feel a little better regarding this.

I'm really happy to hear you got the right help from Change Grow Live and had a great key worker. Not having the best experience with treatment services in the past, to feeling like you have no complaints now is such nice feedback.

I'm so glad you got support from Intuitive Thinking Skills and not only learning a lot from the courses, but also utilising the skills you have learnt into your day to day life. That's amazing that you specifically enjoyed learning how your brain works so you have a better understanding on how to control your desires.

More importantly though, it's so nice to hear you feel much more positive! When you think back to how your addiction started to now, it's amazing progress you have made and you should be so proud of yourself.

Congratulations to both your new born and being 12 weeks drug free! I'm glad you have set yourself some future goals for the end of the year. I wish you all the best of luck achieving them.

Good luck with everything!

Kind regards,

Tasneem
