"Virtual visiting experience is technology at its best"

About: Belfast Health & Social Care Trust / Virtual Visiting Service

(as a friend),

Due to curtailed hospital visits during the pandemic I noticed an A4 notice on a corridor window regarding a virtual visit. As the patient and his wife were elderly I discussed this with his wife and set up a visit. I would use my iPhone.

It was so easy to do and the lady Ursula in patient liaison was extremely helpful, she took the necessary details and within minutes I had the link emailed to me and was all set to go.

On the day just as I was about to log on I got a call about it. There was a very nice gentleman with the patient who spoke to us and showed the patient how to hold the device and what to do. His wife and I spoke to him for a few minutes and then I left her to continue. It was great to see and talk to him. He was thrilled to be able to see and talk to his wife and she was delighted to see and talk to him.

Just wish I had known about this before. Technology at its best. Thanks to the patient liaison team for making this happen.

Suggestion

Maybe the ward could advise relatives about this great service as it was just by chance that I saw the notice?

Dear Lulibelle,

My name is Máire and I'm the Patient Experience Manager within the Belfast Trust. Thank you for getting in touch to tell us about your experience of using the Virtual Visiting service.

We know that when visiting is restricted, it can be very challenging both for our patients, but also their loved ones. I want to thank you for your kindness in supporting the patient and his wife to be able to connect. It's so lovely to hear that you were able to help them to access the service.

Our team are heartened to hear that the service they offer is making a difference to those who are seperated, and I will pass on your lovely words about Ursula and how smooth you found the process.

I agree that we should be shouting about the virtual visiting service to help people hear about it, and you taking the time to share this feedback will help people to learn about it more. I've also asked each of the ward managers to make sure that the staff are also aware of the service and can talk to their patients about it.

Thank you again for taking the time to support your friends and I hope the patient recovers well and is home with his wife soon.

Best wishes,

Máire
