"Senior midwive needs to learn compassion again."

About: Derriford Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I had a very traumatic birth and my baby was whisked off to nicu.

I only have praise for all of the nicu staff and most of the doctors and 2 midwives that helped deliver my baby.

I feel extremely let down with my after care when I had to stay a week due to sepsis.

One midwife in particular was one I wish I had complained about.

They refused to give me paracetamol and even the other midwives where confused as to why... I had just been extremely poorly with my baby in nicu and I felt they had absolutely no compassion in the slightest. I felt they were very patronising towards me and there's a number of reasons she has given me good reason to complain.

I'm someone that never complains and the care I received from this person has really effected me and how I feel about my maternity care which is so sad as most of the staff were great and compassionate.

I'd definitely like to praise the student midwifes who were great and so supportive and also all the doctors that came and saw me and helped my baby get better.

May I thank you for taking the time to detail your concerns regarding the care you received in the Maternity Department at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. I absolutely appreciate it is not always easy to raise concerns and know patients and families do not take this step lightly.

I am truly saddened to read of the emotional distress you have clearly experienced following your baby’s birth and unexpected admision to the Neonatal Intesnive Care Unit. I would like to convey my most sincere apologies to both you and your family. May I thank you for taking the time to share your personal experiences and for providing some valuable reflections on how the Maternity Service could have improved the care you received.

I would like to offer my personal reassurance that the review of all such feedback is taken very seriously and the outcome of which is paramount to the ongoing development of the maternity service. I would be more than happy to speak with you personally to support you with these concerns, either now or in the future and I can be contacted through the hospitals Patient Advice and Liaison Service either by telephone 01752 439884 or alternatively by email plh-tr.PALS@nhs.net

Yours Sincerely

Ms Helen Harling
