Its 4am in the morning and I've just had to retrieve my 78 year old mum from outside her house in the rain due to incompetence.
She was admitted by ambulance due to severe abdominal pain requiring iv morphine to get her to the Western. She arrived at approximately 7pm and by 1am they had decided she was going home. She tried to call me however was unable to reach me so the hospital arranged a taxi and dropped her off at her house where she had no house key.
I am absolutely fuming that:
1. She was discharged so quickly following IV morphine with her pain level rated a 10 on discharge, no different to when she phoned the ambulance
2. Elderly patient who lives alone thrown out of a hospital unwell without knowing there was anyone to care for her
3. Discharged without any pain relief.
This is absolutely unacceptable. I appreciate bed spaces are short but she asked to stay overnight and was told no. I foresee us having to now phone another ambulance for readmission if circumstances don't improve. I really don't believe they got to the bottom of the cause of the pain.
