"Staff face masks"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Gynaecology Services

(as a relative),

A relative of mine was a patient in ward 309 at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. I visited her while she was a patient and then picked her up when she was discharged. On the three occasions that I was on the ward I was concerned by the staffs use of face masks as several appeared to be wearing them incorrectly. As elective surgery patients have to have negative PCR tests for the surgery to go ahead it a waste of resources and is putting patients at risk when the masks staff are wearing often barely cover their mouths. My relative refused to let me say anything while she was still a patient as she felt it would negatively impact the care she was receiving. She also mentioned that she felt that some of the trained nurse who were meant to be looking after her were uninterested and only appeared when pressured by others to provide pain killers.

Good morning Starship666

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback after your relatives recent inpatient stay in 309. I must first apologise on behalf of NHS Grampian for the delay in responding to your post, and also for the incorrect practice you witnessed for staff adherence to face masks. This certainly does not comply with what is advised both locally and nationally and falls below NHS Grampians expected high standards of practice.

Following your feedback I have met with the Senior Charge Nurse to address staff compliance. We are completing spot checks on a daily basis, observing staff compliance with personal protective equipment to protect our patients, and have reinforced the boards policy for all staff. This is being undertaken alongside weekly audits to capture patients opinions on care received to ensure no other patient experiences what your relative felt during her time in the ward. I would like to reassure you that we have an open an honest policy in NHS Grampian and fully support all forms of feedback from our service users.

I wish your relative well in their recovery and thank you for taking the time to be so open an honest in your feedback

Best wishes

Alice Ritchie
