"Maternity services"

About: Borders General Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

This was my 3rd time here giving birth, this time an elective caesarean. The staff have always been friendly and knowledgeable. No major problems this time but probably not as universally impressive as normal - inconsistent advice about breast feeding, some staff happier to help than others, had to wait quite a long time for medications, checks etc. Plenty of food. Staff probably overworked due to covid.

Dear Girdy

Congratulations on the birth of your third baby and thank you for providing honest feedback.

I am saddened to hear you felt the care was not as impressive as normal and that you had been given inconsistent advice on breast feeding. All midwives are trained to UNICEF BFI standards and the advice should be consistent and in line with our NHS Borders feeding policy.

Again, medication should be administered within a timely manner. I will discuss your feedback with SCM Grieve and we will remind staff of the importance of given consistent breastfeeding advice and providing medication within a timely manner.

If you would like to discuss these issues further, please contact myself on 01896 826038 or Shona Finch (Clinical Manager) on 01896 825503.

Kind Regards

Kirsteen Guthrie

Interim Lead Midwife
