"My stroke at 40"

About: Barnet Hospital / General medicine Edgware Community Hospital / Neurological Rehabilitation Centre Neurological Rehabilitation Centre / Inpatient Unit Northwick Park Hospital / General Medicine

(as a service user),

I had a stroke less than 2 weeks after I turned 40, reading up on strokes after I realise there were plenty of signs, they just weren't the regular signs which are normally advertised. This left me so confused, after months of being  told life begins at 40, I was now out of my depth, having to envision a life I' never though I'd have this early in life.

I was in hospital before I came to NRC, and this is the first time I feel I'm in end game territory with plans being made to finally get home, its been and continues to be a long journey, most not easy, for me. The early morning medication starts have been the hardest, I'm someone who sleeps late, so being woken up at 5am felt like a form of punishment

Hi rkling kesha

Thank you for sharing your experience with us, this is really informative for both staff and other service users. It is good to hear you are being supported to plan to return home in the near future.

Thank you for raising the challenges regarding the timing of morning medications, this will be discussed at the next staff meeting. Please do continue to share your story and suggest any other changes which may make your journey easier.

Kind regards,

Dear rkling kesha

Thank you for your post about the treatment you have received in a number of hospitals following your stroke.

I can only imagine the difficulties you have experienced having suffered a stroke at such a young age. I hope that you continue to get good care, treatment and therapy at the NRC, and that you are soon able to go back home.

I wish you all the best with your continued recovery, and thank you again for taking the time to share your experience with us.

Kind regards

Peter Hare
