I received Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) in London as part of West London NHS Trust, Ealing IAPT. It is difficult to describe the impact the sessions have been to my life, but I will share a few of the benefits I have experienced.... Before therapy, I felt like my mind was overloading with thoughts. It was difficult for me to make sense of my childhood and understand certain aspects of my life. Shole, my counsellor, patiently listened to my story and helped me identify patterns in my childhood that have spilled over to my adult life. The insight she provided has been truly life changing for me. Now, when faced with difficult situations, I understand my own reactions better.
Counselling is a difficult process, it was hard to dig deep into my past and you have to be patient. But I am so proud of myself for completing it, because it has truly changed the relationships I have with others for the better.
Shole listened to me patiently and she advised me in such a kind way. She was down to earth, honest and genuine. She is one of the smartest people I know, because she helped me understand my life as a total stranger. I will be forever grateful to her.
Finally, I would like to add that I am a British Pakistani Muslim. I understand the stigma attached to counselling in our communities. But most of us second generation immigrants are carrying the trauma of our predecessors and we need to deal with our burdens.
I hope this helps others, XXX
