"Breast clinic referral Crosshouse hospital"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Medical Oncology

(as a service user),

I noticed that my right breast had a funny shape and I have found a few lumps just underneath and to the outside of the nipple area. My breast feels swollen to the outside and is extremely painful, with pains shooting up to my shoulder, collarbone and neck. I made an appointment with my GP within the week and she was great. She referred me to the clinic straight away and told me a 4-6 week wait but might be sooner. I though omg that’s long but thought what can I do. I phoned crosshouse appointments to see what was going on a week later (just to see if I could get a date to take off work) but the woman said it would be 8 weeks. I’m horrified at this wait time given I’m so anxious and trying to hide this from my children is horrendous. The GP confirmed the lump and said there is definitely something there.

I feel so frustrated, angry and upset but there’s nothing I can do, especially when I’m hearing that people are waiting 2-3 weeks in other parts of Scotland. I’m thinking maybe going private is my only option but I don’t have the money for this and would just put me in debt. I’m really really anxious.  I feel this is completely unacceptable for a referral when the possibility of having cancer is suspected? Is this right? It’s really 8 weeks wait?

Thank you for sharing your experience, this must be a very worrying time and your frustrations in relation to the waiting time for a Breast Clinic appointment are completely understandable.

We would welcome the opportunity to look into your concerns in more detail and if you feel that would be helpful, please feel free to contact me on 01563 826210 or by email, linda.russell7@aapct.scot.nhs.uk.
