"Amazing care"

About: Alder Hey Hospital

After a few hours wait at A&E in Stoke, we were told there is a bed for my son at Alder Hey as he would need a scope procedure the next morning. We experienced kind assistance, professional behaviour. Several times was I explained what would be done to my son before signing consent. I was allowed to be with him until the anesthetic kicked in and they walked me back to him as he started to stir after the procedure. I saw they were explaining things to him too and made sure he was comfortable. I appreciate everyone who works so hard, even over Christmas, so that we could be helped.

I did not understand why I did not have to undergo a covid test since I was allowed to be with my son and around the staff. For the safety of hospital employees and patients, I think child’s company should also be tested.

Thank you for taking the time to leave these comments - I will make sure this is shared with the ENT and theatre teams. It is great to hear about your recent visit to Alder Hey and how the staff were able to make this experience a positive one for you and your son.

In regards to your query about covid testing of parents and carers, there is guidance on the Trust internet page which clarifies that any parent or carer with covid symptoms should not come on site and when on site they should wear a mask. In line with national NHS guidance visiting numbers are also restricted. If a parent/carer develops symptoms, they would be given a PCR test. Our emphasis is on testing patients - all inpatients are swabbed on admission, on day 3, day 5/7 and then weekly swabs.
