"Giving birth in a pandemic"

About: Maternity care / Ward 45 ( antenatal) Maternity care / Ward 46 (post-natal) Maternity care / Ward 48 (labour ward)

(as a service user),

I gave birth to my first child recently. The care I received on the labour ward was amazing. Huge thanks to the wonderful midwives especially Maeve, Terrie and Nicole who helped delivery my baby. My baby came in a hurry so no time for any pain relief and I couldn’t have done that without these girls reassuring me and talking me through everything.

We were moved to the post-natal ward and we had a two night stay there. Again fantastic midwives and nursing assistants. I want to say a huge thank you to Amanda who worked on this ward and basically taught me how to breastfeed and keep my baby latched on. I would definitely not have been able to do it by myself and as a result of her taking the time to talk me through it all, I have been able to successfully breastfeed my baby.

Due to restrictions my husband was only allowed in for 1 hr a day, however the days flew in especially with staff constantly checking in to see how we were doing and offering lots of support.

Looking back my experience was very positive. However I do want to say my time on the induction ward was dreadful. Certain staff should really reflect on their practice and how they engage with expectant mothers.

Again, huge thanks to the wonderful, caring midwives who helped me, I’ll always be grateful.

encourage people to share their experiences of health and social care, what matters to you, what you particularly liked or disliked so that we can share with the relevant department, and staff .

Hello DeeFomac

I hope you and your baby are doing well. I would like to reassure you that your posting was shared with the lead Midwife and Midwives of the wards that you mentioned. Normally the staff do respond but as they are all under a lot of pressure it has taken a bit longer and for that I do apologise. You will receive a response from maternity services when clinical pressures have eased off a bit.

Best wishes

Vi Gray
