"Outstanding colorectal cancer care at Lewisham"

I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer out of the blue in summer 2019. It was totally unexpected and I had no prior symptoms. I had opted for a colonoscopy as a precaution due to a family history of colorectal cancer. Despite not having had any symptoms the colorectal team took my concern seriously and encouraged me to have the scan.

Just after the procedure the consultant explained that he was certain he had detected cancer in my bowel and I was in utter shock. But I was also immediately taken care of by my wonderful specialist nurses Victoria and Melanie. Vickki organised the necessary scans to happen on the very same day and did not leave my side until there was a plan in place. Mel was with me at all the appointments that followed and her gentle presence helped me to make it through the most scary times.

Recovery after the operation was tough but Mel and Vickki helped me to get back on my feet. The ward staff were amazing and at no point did I feel let down.

I started chemotherapy a couple of months later and it was very tough. Jean, the head nurse of the chemo ward, was absolutely brilliant. I have never seen anyone multi-task like she does: she was running the ward, answering calls and being patient and caring with all of us undergoing treatment.

During chemotherapy I had to go to A&E on multiple occasions and I was always seen promptly. Great care was taken to isolate me from other patients. The phone support line for chemo patients at Guys was always available to answer my calls.

I continue to have my regular cancer check ups at Lewisham Hospital and so far there has been no indication of cancer recurrence. My nurses are still supporting me 2 years after my diagnosis.

Having spoken to others who have been through the cancer journey in Germany (where I am from originally) I can say with certainty that my treatment at Lewisham Hospital has been outstanding.
