"Womans Health Unit"

About: Perth Royal Infirmary / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I have been complaining about painful heavy periods and I finally received a letter from the hospital for my appointment. I was expecting this appointment to be an initial scan and discussion with the consultant. I was completely unprepared for the possibility that this would turn into a full STD panel and uterine biopsy.  I left in shock, bleeding and in a lot of pain. Whilst I understand these procedures are necessary, I feel that patients should be warned well in advance. Documentation for a biopsy indicates that ibuprofen should be taken an hour before the procedure. I had no idea it was going to happen and therefore did not.  The nurses were kind and I could deal with the 35 minute wait, but to have to undergo an invasive highly personal experience without any preparation is unacceptable and let's the whole team down.

Dear Nic79

I am truly sorry to hear of your experience and would like to understand this further to allow the service to ensure that patients are provided with the best experience possible.

I would like to have the opportunity to discuss this with you more fully.

Can you possibly contact me to discuss this further.

I can be contacted by calling Ninewells Hospital on 01382 660111, asking for pager 4289.

Thank you

Denise Marshall

Update posted by Nic79 (a service user)

I have escalated my complaint yesterday and have received correspondence of a stage 2/ level 2 investigation. A simple apology means nothing I am severely traumatised and also (for the first time EVER even after 4 c-sections) have an infection that I picked up from the procedure. This is an all too common thread regarding womans health in this area. I wish also to reiterate that my complaint is with Perth R. Infirmary not Ninewells.
