"Discrimination"

About: Barnet Hospital

Attended ED with my elderly mother with arm injury . As she has alzheimers has difficulty with communication & I am her registered carer. As she needed me to stay with her she was unable to go into UTC waiting room & was left in "overflow" waiting room for 2 1/2 hrs . This " overflow" waiting area is the corridor with an open door external door & hard metal seats. I was specifically told it was because there was 2 of us that we couldn't be in UTC waiting room. My mother is 81 yrs old & physically able & doesn't have a visible disability or extra needs .My mother was eventually phoned by the clinician to ask where she was as he couldn't find her in the waiting room. I fully accept & understand the need for social distancing & ensuring waiting areas are not overcrowded but penalising an elderly person with a broken arm for needing a carer to be with her is unacceptable.

Dear Fiona, thank you for taking the time to share your experience of Barnet emergency department. We're very sorry to read that you and your mother had to wait in the corridor in order for you to be with her, which was cold and uncomfortable. There are restrictions on accompanying visitors to the emergency department at the moment, but we recognise that these restrictions should be balanced against the individual needs of the patient, and we are sorry for you and your mother’s experience. If you would like this to be looked into further, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) either by email bcfpals@nhs.net or telephone 0208 216 4924. Kind regards, the Patient Experience team.
