"An example of how health care should be"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Cancer Services (Medical Oncology) Roxburghe House Roxburghe House / Palliative Care Team

(as a parent/guardian),

My relative is currently in Roxburghe House for support and palliative care . They had a horrific experience on ward 114 ARI  and I was terrified for their safety and spent 12 hours a day there just in case.  They came under the palliative team for support on the ward; they changed drugs, listened and provided person centred care.

Following a move to the service at Roxburghe House they have had nothing other than amazing care . The environment is serene , the staff are great and respond to the buzzer if required.  The room is spacious.  The consultant Claire listens , advises , collaborates and they set goals . The physio and OT visited and provided some relaxation therapy.   Everyone has a lovely attitude so they are less distressed already and although this  won’t change the diagnosis, the care and support is  priceless at this terrible time.

I truly hope that they can get their confidence back and enjoy life with their support  and we never have that terrible experience in ward 114 again.

It is an example of how health care should be. Communication is key , respect and dignity and patient centred.  The staff are how you expect nursing and clinical staff to be.

Sadly the crisis in the NHS is a challenge but the impact that the previous ward had on the whole of our family was horrendous.  When you try to raise it for improvement and feedback you get nothing other than defensiveness. Everything was a battle which was not necessary.

Thank you Roxburghe for your amazing support in these awful times. I might just get them back as the confident person they were even with this terrible illness

Dear Itslindag

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience of both your relatives' admission to Ward 114 and also Roxburghe House.

I am very sorry that your relative and family found the admission to ward 114 to be this way, I assure you all points have been raised with our senior nursing and management team.

I personally wish your relative a continued improvement.
