"Bravo"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Dermatology (Skin Conditions) Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Plastic Surgery

(as the patient),

I found an unusual mole last year. I saw the Doctor and was referred to Dermatology Dept, QEUH, Glasgow.

Within two weeks I had mole removed and sent for analysis. I got a call from Dr Thorley at the hospital to come in and see her the following week.

I was told it was a melanoma and that I would have to attend Plastic Surgery. I saw Mr Morley and was told I needed a deeper dissection to remove more skin and also a scans to check if it had entered the lymph nodes. This was done at the New Victoria Hospital in Glasgow, in September.

After the operation I was told it would be 6 weeks to get the results back. The results came back showing there had been miniscule cancer in the lymph nodes that were removed. So no further treatment needed at this time.

I now have appointments every 6 months between Dermatology and Plastic Surgery to check my progress.

I was lucky to catch the melanoma quickly, and am amazed at the speed of the treatment I received.

Dr Thorley at Dermatology has been fabulous, answers all my questions, in fact is delighted when I come prepared to ask.

She never sugar coats her answers and makes you feel your future is now in the safe hands of the NHS. Bravo!

Dear Living with Melanoma

Thank you for taking the time to leave such lovely feedback in regards to the time you spent attending the Dermatology Department and the Plastic Surgery Department of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

It was nice to hear how all the staff have made you feel welcomed and answered any questions you may have had in what must have been a very worrying time for you and your family.

I'm glad the staff managed to catch the melanoma quickly and your treatment is going well.

I will be delighted to pass on your thanks to all the staff involved who I'm sure will be touched to hear how you've been getting on.

Please take care and I hope your treatment continues to get better and better.

Kind regards

Kevin

Dear Bravo,

Bravo to you too for saying Thank you so nicely. Your GP is to be thanked also for being alert to your need to be seen quickly, I am sure you will have given thanks there too.

Do tell others about your experience - especially if you were a sun bed user or over indulged in sunshine. At MASScot we have all been guilty and like you live with the memory or the disease. Keep up your monthly skin and gland checks - that's your part of the bargain. Leigh
