We were transferred from Altnagelvin A & E to the Royal Childrens Hospital at midnight. My child had surgery the next morning and went to PICU afterwards. We were to be discharged to the ward the next day but just before discharge they had an anaphylactic reaction to a new antibiotic . The staff were amazing when it happened and had things sorted in a very short time and kept us both calm.
Transfer to the ward was the next day but unfortunately after a week infection levels weren't getting any better and a lung drain had to be put in to try and drain some of the infection away. Antibiotic options were limited as the anaphylactic reaction was to penicillin. As the infection still wasn’t under control the decision was made to transfer back to PICU where a further wash out and a second lung drain was put in. The surgeons, PICU consultants and ID worked tirelessly to make my child well again.
A week or so later after lots of hard work by the whole team there was some progress. A few days after that they were well enough to be transferred back to surgical ward. The care we got was second to none from the auxiliary staff to the consultants. Everyone was so friendly, kind and helpful to our family and especially to our child. The surgeon, Ms Lawlor, made things so much easier for us, just by the way she spoke to us and explained things to us all. A time that was very frightening for our family was made so much easier by the people who provided care. We will be forever grateful for the care we received and my child talks all the time about the care, and has fond memories of all the great nurses who provided such good care.
"Amazing care - friendly, kind and helpful"
