"Discharged home with lack of support"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Geriatric Assessment Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a relative),

A close relative was admitted to ward 102 after a fall at home via two amazing paramedics.  In her 80’s the doctor and nursing staff said she wouldn’t be discharged home until safe to do so (before this fall she was totally independent with a walking stick)

Unfortunately after 24 hours she was discharged home , with no support. She was unable to mobilise without a Zimmer frame in the hospital however was sent home without one. She needed close supervision as unable to get in/out of bed and discharged with two large infected wounds to her knees which now requires district nurse and GP input.

As a family we have had to provide 24/7 care and support to her so she could stay at home and have had to alert the GP to get the nurses and arrange for OT and physio assessments to be done at her house .

Very disappointing and hope we never have to deal with ward 102 again after this admission and both nurses and medical staff for listening to the patient’s or family’s concerns.

I am very sorry this was you and your relatives experience. This is not the quality of care we aim to deliver. Can you please get in touch with Fiona (fiona.forbes5@nhs.scot), the nurse manager for the area so we can look into this further.

Regards Fiona
