My mother-in-law was in hospital and despite writing an information sheet which identified 'what mattered to her' and advising nursing staff over the phone that she had a preferred name and was never called by her formal first name, it was only when I was able to visit on the eighth day of her stay ( no visitors were allowed until that point) that this was changed on the board above her bed and staff started using it.
She is also a resident of Alexandria and it was only when I visited that this was highlighted and she was identified as being appropriate to transfer to our local hospital. I feel let down by a service which promotes person centred care that these details were over looked. As a family, we are happy that she received the appropriate care for her condition that she was admitted with and appreciate the strain staff are under, however this information is collected on admission and should be communicated to staff caring for her. My mother in law has no communication difficulties but was feeling very vulnerable at the time and didn't feel able to speak up.
