"Personalised care communication"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / General Medicine (wards 8, 10, 11, 14, 18 & 27)

(as a relative),

My mother-in-law was in hospital and despite writing an information sheet which identified 'what mattered to her' and advising nursing staff over the phone that she had a preferred name and was never called by her formal first name, it was only when I was able to visit on the eighth day of her stay ( no visitors were allowed until that point) that this was changed on the board above her bed and staff started using it.

She is also a resident of Alexandria and it was only when I visited that this was highlighted and she was identified as being appropriate to transfer to our local hospital. I feel let down by a service which promotes person centred care that these details were over looked. As a family, we are happy that she received the appropriate care for her condition that she was admitted with and appreciate the strain staff are under, however this information is collected on admission and should be communicated to staff caring for her. My mother in law has no communication difficulties but was feeling very vulnerable at the time and didn't feel able to speak up.

Dear Tiltic,

Thank you for taking the time to share your mother in laws experience. I am sorry to hear that we did not achieve the high standard of patient centred and inclusive care that we aim for. Using her preferred name and arranging a timely transfer to a more local hospital should definitely have been priorities in her care. Thank you for highlighting these issues and I will share your feedback with the wider team to remind us to be more vigilant.

I am glad the care your mother in law received provided a positive aspect to her stay in hospital.

Please contact me on 07977030666 or Claire.Ganner@ggc.scot.nhs.uk if you wish to discuss these issues in more detail.
