I am disappointed and upset at the lack of care my child received at the George Elliot hospital A & E yesterday. They suffer from mental health issues and I had been told by 111 and Rise that an assessment of mental health could be done at A & E. We arrived just after 2.
We had the first triage assessment within the hour and then we were left. My child was struggling with the noise, and the sensory issues of the waiting room, hadn’t been to the toilet all day and hadn't eaten or drunk for well over 24 hours. They ended up lashing out at me and caught me in the eye. I asked for an ice pack and they said they didn’t have any. They wet a tissue and gave it to me. I explained the level of distress but nothing was done. There was no ventilation in the room and there were children who may have had contagious diseases.
We were not offered access to a hot drink or anything. We tried to find a coffee machine but all three were broken. They were finally seen after 10pm. There were no checks, no blood pressure, temperature, water sample or bloods taken as requested by CAMH’s. The doctor told us that we were in the wrong place. He lectured us about being in the wrong hospital and that our postcode was a B so we should go to Birmingham. He said L is for Leicester, C is for Coventry and B is for Birmingham. As I pointed out we are North Warwickshire and we pay our council tax to North Warwickshire then this is our nearest hospital. This is the second time I have been treated this way in the same A & E. Also I thought that anyone could go to any A & E ? I was then lectured on there being no beds for children with mental health and that although my child had not washed for 2 weeks, they suggested it looked as though their hair had been brushed ? My child had not brushed their hair, they were mentally struggling to be there and staring into space. No care and no help was provided, and I am appalled that no one would help and they left us all day. The waiting room was completely empty. I want this to be investigated and for an apology and change of the way people are treated, when asking for help.
