"My son's day surgery"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Day surgery

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was admitted to RHC for day surgery today. Whilst the overall care was excellent, especially pre op when all the staff worked together to help keep my child calm, I was very disappointed with the way his recovery was handled. He was returned from surgery to the ward without me being informed straight away so by the time I was taken to see him he was extremely distressed as he had no idea where he was or where I was. He is only 2 so it was difficult to explain what was happening. This caused both myself and my son a great deal of distress and it took me a long time to calm him down. I feel like at the very least I should have been taken to the ward just before he was due to arrive, but better still I should have been there for him waking up so he had a familiar face and would not be as scared about what was going on.

Dear Mcmarlin,

Thank you so much for reaching out and getting in touch with us.

I really appreciated your positive comments regarding the overall care your little boy received. This means so much to our team members and will be shared with them.

I was so sorry to read of your disappointment regarding the timings of your sons return to the ward following surgery and that you weren't given the opportunity to be immediately available to him. This would have been very upsetting for him, particularly given his young age, and consequently very distressing for you to see his confusion and distress. Please accept my very genuine apology that this happened.

We got this wrong in terms of timing. As a whole service, we'd really like to learn from your experience so this doesn't happen again. Would you mind dropping me an email with your sons name and date of birth on it? My email address is coral.mcgowan@ggc.scot.nhs.uk. This will allow us to look in detail at what happened and what we can do differently in the future.

On behalf of the entire team here at RHC, I hope your wee boy is recovering well from his surgery and is now feeling much better.

Sending best wishes

Take care

Coral
