"Care after suicide attempt"

About: John Radcliffe Hospital Royal Victoria Hospital (Dundee)

(as a service user),

Life was going really well for me, I had two promotions inside nine months, I had a new company car, I’d finally quit a ten year drug habit. But in 2018 I tried to commit suicide.

I then wake up in Oxford where I’d been airlifted to and had over 80 hours of surgery. I had a significant traumatic brain injury and broken absolutely every bone in my lower body and over 25 metal plates had been screwed on my bones to stabilise all the fractures. My Dad flew from Scotland every single weekend and was at my bedside for five months whilst I was in a coma. I then got moved nearer my home and my Dad the whole time was googling away at what the next stage of my recovery would be then he found Centre for Brain Injury Rehabilitation at the Royal Victoria hospital which was less than ten minutes from his house. I had a Red Cross ambulance drive me up there. I arrived in middle of the night. My very first full day I met the physio department who gave me crutches to try . I’ve NEVER been without them since. Physios previously were happy with me being able to get around in a wheelchair and standing beside walking was never on the agenda for me. In fact they had made me fearful of putting weight through my legs even though metal is stronger than bone. I stayed at CBIR and I loved Dundee that much I went home to pack up in early 2019 and returned to Dundee later that year. Without coming to the Royal Victoria I know I wouldn’t be up on my feet so THANK YOU
