"Thankful for the Perinatal Mental Health Service"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as the patient),

I have 2 children ( 22 months & a newborn) both whom were born in Aberdeen Maternity Hospital. I had a very traumatic birth with my first born & suffered with PTSD afterwards and I was really struggling to deal with my emotions. I got referred to Perinatal Mental health team, this was the very first I had heard of this service I truly feel it isn’t recognised enough and not many expecting mums/mums knows it’s there if they need to reach out, I’m so glad I took the leap because this service truly got me through my PTSD and my second pregnancy.

I just want to Mention Shona, she is absolutely incredible and went above and beyond for me and my family, I honestly couldn’t speak more highly of her. I was very anxious throughout my pregnancy and would constantly message her and she would respond as soon as she could and was always there with the most supportive advice and you would instantly feel the weight off your shoulders after you spoke with her. She made sure everyone who was dealing with me during birth was aware of how I was feeling and I can’t tell you how big a difference it made.

I really feel this service should be spoken about to expecting mums during midwife appointments so they are aware this service is out there if they were to need it. I will be forever grateful for the service Shona/Perinatal Mental Health Team provided, as I would have seriously struggled without them.

Thank you very much yellowbd37 for posting your experience of the perinatal mental health service. We really appreciate your feedback and your post had been passed onto Shona who is delighted. We are currently in the process of expanding our perinatal mental health team and hope in the next few months to ensure that all members of the maternity team are aware of the new service and in turn have this highlighted to all pregnant/new mums within NHS Grampian.
