"Good birth experience"

About: Maternity care (Wards 47, 48 & 50) / Labour suite maternity Maternity care (Wards 47, 48 & 50) / Maternity Assesment/Triage Maternity care (Wards 47, 48 & 50) / Maternity care (Ward 50)

(as a service user),

I want to start by saying that this is my 3rd baby born at this hospital and by far my best over all experience here. My first was traumatic due to not being listened to, passed about not knowing what was happening on diamorphene that caused massive anxiety and a delivery midwife who scared me with some of what they said while I was giving birth and followed by a tear that became infected and lead to sepsis that again nobody listened to me when I said something wasn’t right this all left me with a fear of birth and getting sick. My 2nd was an emergency section due to being breech, after a failed very painful ecv.

This time was different apart from one midwife in maternity assessment who had no bedside manner whatsoever, wouldn’t let me labour on my side and was just horrible when telling me off for screaming. I was having a panic attack and extremely frightened as I was progressing quickly and asking for a c-section believing it is my right to ask at any time having had one before. They were snappy and I felt they were lying when saying I wasn’t even that far on and made a comment about taking away the gas and air if I wasn’t really in labour because I didn’t need it. I felt that they just couldn’t be bothered to try be caring and I really didn’t like the attitude at all.

My birth partner wasn’t happy with the way I was dealt with either and I was lucky to have them there to reassure me.

My child was born mid November and delivered by the most amazing midwife - I believe her name was Nelly. My labour was frightening due to my fears or tearing and getting sick and feeling unheard. This amazing midwife turned that all around and I truly felt like a friend was helping me deliver my baby. She was calm and professional and listened to what I wanted and was able to instruct to me clearly what I needed to do while letting me do it in my own time. She was there during surgery to stitch my tear and reassured me my baby was in safe hands and after in recovery she chatted away as she worked and like I said it was like being with a friend. What a fantastic midwife to have.
I am forever grateful to have had a positive birth experience because of her. Thank you to the rest of the staff in the room to everyone who held my hand when I was scared.

The staff in surgery were just amazing I felt so calm and well taken care of there was one lovely lady checking in on me and a man who cracked jokes who made me laugh and feel more relaxed. The lady who did my stitches and dealt with my blood loss had done a great job.  I am in shock at how good I feel - zero pain and minimum bleeding I’m so glad I had her fix me! Thank you all I truly appreciate everything.

The maternity ward was great I was in ward 50. All the ladies who cared for me were amazing so kind and happy to answer any questions happy to chat knew exactly what they were doing and so encouraging and reassuring. I believe the name of the main midwife who looked after me was Mary, she is a star so lovely to be around and the care she delivered was incredible I feel so lucky to have had her. All the staff there made my three night stay so comfortable so thank you all you work hard and it didn’t go unnoticed.

I would like to thank Consultant Roberts for their kindness and the encouragement when they told me it was too late for a section and reminding me that I wanted a natural birth.  They gave me the courage I needed to accept what was happening. The other Dr I saw was very professional and I’m glad I ended up with a natural birth as they warned me how dangerous a section could be in a professional manner.

Over all I’m happy with my experience I’m happy about how my birth went. I feel empowered and proud and it was worlds apart from the other two all thanks to the wonderful people who were decent kind hard working human beings.

Dear mumof32021,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your experiences within the QEUH. We value your feedback to enable us to improve the standard of care that we strive to achieve at all times. I would like to congratulate you on the birth of your 3rd baby and I am delighted that overall your experience was positive.

I note your dissatisfaction of the care you received throughout your first pregnancy, and I am sorry that you felt that you weren't listened to.

I am delighted that your labour, birth and postnatal experience on this occasion was of a high standard, and all staff will appreciate your feedback and kind words. I do note that your experience within maternity triage was not of a standard that we aim to achieve. Please accept my sincere apology, and I will feed this back to the team for learning and reflection.

I would be happy for you to contact me directly should you wish to discuss this further.

Kind Regards,

Mairi McDermid

Lead Midwife
