"Access to Cervical cancer screening"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as a service user),

I moved to Scotland from another country in 2019 and I have been trying to access cervical screening through Gp surgeries numerous times but have always been denied because my last cervical screening was in 2019 (just before I moved to Scotland). Apparently there is new evidence that determine that cervical screening is meant to happen once every 5 years.

People should still have the right to access one within that time frame and according to the data that is posted on the nhs website 'get checked early' about how many women in the UK are diagnosed with cervical cancer every day etc. How can you tell me that I can't have one until 2024 and what if the one I do then shows it's too late?? Will you take responsibility?

Dear Yota

Thank you for getting in touch.

I have spoken with my colleagues in Public Health and they have advised that in Scotland, Cervical screening is offered to anyone with a cervix aged between 25 and 64 years every 5 years. HPV testing replaced cervical cytology as the primary test in April 2020.

If you are having any of the following symptoms please speak to your GP:

vaginal bleeding that is unusual for you, including after the menopause, after sex, or between regular periods changes to vaginal discharge pain or discomfort during sex unexplained pain in your lower back or between your hip bones (pelvis).

You can find more information about Cervical Screening at: www.nhsinform.scot/cervicalscreening or Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust: www.jostrust.org.uk or call 0808 802 8000.

Kind Regards

Nicole
