"Poor care and discharge experience"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Care of the Elderly (Wards 13-16)

(as a relative),

My dad was admitted with a fall. His leg was checked over and no fracture or break ,they kept him in over the weekend for some physio and to see ot, I got to see dad on a Sunday afternoon, he didn't look well and had a crackle in his chest despite numerous phone calls from myself to say he can't lie flat due to his Parkinson's and can't breathe properly.

I called that night to be asked to speak to a doctor who asked me to come up straight away, They suspected a stroke and was going to treat for seizures to which I explained it was tremors due to Parkinson's, they commenced on a drip for fluids, antibiotic and glucose levels they stated over his bed they would treat him medically and it was basically his Parkinson's. They said he was confused and had incapacity which is untrue, he was refused drinks overnight which I complained about every visit, was being put in his notes and on the board above his bed. My dad tested positive on the day he was sent home, nothing on his patient notes to state covid. My dad was sent home for palliative care having been a man who walked with a zimmer, made his meals to someone double incontinent , unable to walk or talk and problems urinating because they also caused trauma trying to catheterize him when he had an enlarged prostate.

I received him home at 7.30pm on a Friday night with no continence aids. If it wasn't for the help of the care provider we would have had nothing. I witnessed a few members of staff walking about with masks below their nose on several occasions and also told my dad was now bed blocking as nothing could be done. 6 people in a room only one meal appeared to be eaten, these men some with dementia, didn't appear to be made aware that their meal was there. If they didn't answer their preference, then it seemed that they received what the staff decided to give them. The 4 hand sanitizers on the walls around the room had no sanitizer in them.

Dear foxtrotdx43

Firstly, many thanks for taking the time to share details of your dad’s experience during his admission.

This is clearly not the standard of care and treatment that we aspire to and I would like to offer yourself and your dad my sincere apologies for the distress caused during this admission.

I would like to offer you some guidance and therefore ask that you phone the patient affairs team on 01355 585345 to provide more details.

Kind regards.

Shirley-anne

Update posted by foxtrotdx43 (a relative)

After my dad returned home he received palliative care and died on Nov 12. My mum of 84 tested positive to covid 19 along with myself my husband and my son, unfortunately, my mum didn't make it, she had no underlying illnesses.

I can't get over the fact my dad being discharged from ward 15 has caused all this sadness in my family, my mum and dad will now have a joint funeral together.
