The prospect of a daily 60 mile round trip to hospital to receive intravenous antibiotic medication does not, at first, seem like an attractive option. However, compared to the alternative of a four day admission to hospital for the same treatment, it becomes more attractive. Add to that immediate attention on arrival, delightful nurses who give a friendly welcome, set up the infusion with a minimum of fuss, are not judgemental when you accidentally remove your cannula overnight and give you a cup of coffee, and medical staff who are happy to discuss and fully explain clinical problems, then the visit, far from being a chore, becomes a pleasure.
At a time when the NHS is subject to a lot of criticism, this unit stands out as a model of excellent, efficient care.
Thank you OPAT for such excellent service
