"Very Long Wait"

About: King George Hospital

I understand the doctors and nurses are under tremendous pressure due to covid but it took me upto 2 and half hours to just have a word with my local GP in the morning. Once they picked up they said a doctor will call in the afternoon. The doctor called and advised prescriptions and said to go to A&E urgently. I went to King George Hospital A&E at 6 in the evening. I had to wait in queue standing for about 2 hours till a nurse saw me and gave me a red card and told me to go to A&E reception. At the reception they said it will take a minimum of 2 hours to meet a nurse and there after 7 hours to meet a doctor. I waited to meet the nurse and explained my suitation and told him that I am in pain and can't wait for so long. I requested him to give me a nebuliser and take my blood test and let me go home to return next day. But he said its my wish. I waited for 2 hours more till I got a nebuliser and then the nurse inside told me it will take a minimum of 8 hours to see a doctor. I met a man who was waiting for 13 hours just to see a doctor. During my time at the hospital there were so many cases but no treatment only waiting. This situation is bad and needs urgent attention from one and all. Kindly look into this to make the system better an value human life be it patients & /or NHS staff. Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback, I am so sorry to hear about the wait that you encountered. Unfortunately, we are unable to determine the number of patients that are going to need to access our Emergency Department on any one day, therefore sometimes the wait to be seen is longer than we would like. All patients attending our Emergency Department are triaged and are clinically prioritised in order. We are also as a Trust looking at ways that we can help reduce the waiting times for our patients. I am however so sorry to hear about the wait your husband encountered. If you would like to discuss your concerns further, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01708 435 454 or by email bhrut.pals@nhs.net and they will do all they can to help you. Once again, thank you for taking the time to provide us with you feedback.

Kind Regards

James Avery Divisional Director of Nursing Emergency Medicine Division
