"Waiting for a bed"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I have been in part of the Ulster a&e since yesterday waiting on a bed, I understand the bed pressures at present however as someone with multiple wounds it’s disappointing to be told they can’t change dressings in a&e after being reassured by night staff last night it would be done. This has meant they’ve been bleeding through my clothing for the last 12 hours - I am being told I will have to wait to get to a ward.

Also since coming in 24 hours ago I have been offered one cup of tea and no food. I assume due to being in a side room I may have been missed.

Hi mce567

Thank you for alerting me to your experience.

I am very sorry that you have waited for dressings and have not had access to refreshment.

I have now contacted service leadership to advise them of your situation.

You should expect a member of Emergency Department nursing team to respond to you quickly.

Best wishes

Conor

Update posted by Mce567 (a service user)

Hi,

I posted this on Saturday (it only got published on care opinion today) but I was moved to the Lagan valley on Sunday. I received excellent care since moving however it was a very stressful experience in ED.

Thanks for your response.

Hi Mce567

I am sorry to hear of your experience while waiting in the ED for a bed. It is regrettable you had to wait so long for a bed and glad to hear you have received excellent care since moving.

We do aim for a high standard of care for all our patients in ED. I apologise that this has not been your experience and thank you for telling us of your experience. I will share your story with the staff and we will take the learning from it. We are always seeking to improve the care we give to patients including those who are waiting for a bed in ED.

I hope you are getting better and improving everyday.

Kind Regards

Jenny

Interim Lead Nurse Emergency Care
