"Missed Medications when visiting hospital"

About: York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

(as a parent/guardian),

I am the parent of an adult patient with Crohn's and I am also a healthcare professional.  Whilst visiting hospital as an outpatient on several occasions, the patient was unable for a variety of reasons, to use loperamide to control the output of a stoma.  There does not seem to have been an understanding of this need by a number of different professionals.  It caused the patient unnecessary discomfort on top of the treatments received, which were for unrelated conditions.  I felt distress for the patient both personally and professionally.

Whilst this is not currently an issue as the patient is receiving care elsewhere as an inpatient, I would like to raise the issue in order to prevent it occurring again or to anyone else.  I am not sure how to do this as it seems to be of a procedural and awareness matter.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this feedback with us. I am very sorry to hear about the experience both you and the adult patient in question have had with regards to the lack of a professional understanding relating to stoma output control. Moreover, we sincerely apologise for the discomfort and distress this caused each of you. It does seem that this may be an issue relating to professional awareness, and so I would encourage you to contact our PALS team on 01904 726262. They will be able to investigate the issue further and explore options moving forward, with the aim of improving our services and the experience of both patients and their relatives.
