I am the parent of an adult patient with Crohn's and I am also a healthcare professional. Whilst visiting hospital as an outpatient on several occasions, the patient was unable for a variety of reasons, to use loperamide to control the output of a stoma. There does not seem to have been an understanding of this need by a number of different professionals. It caused the patient unnecessary discomfort on top of the treatments received, which were for unrelated conditions. I felt distress for the patient both personally and professionally.
Whilst this is not currently an issue as the patient is receiving care elsewhere as an inpatient, I would like to raise the issue in order to prevent it occurring again or to anyone else. I am not sure how to do this as it seems to be of a procedural and awareness matter.
