"I feel I wasted staff's time"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I was advised by my GP to go to A&E due to pain in my stomach, I had a long wait and was seen by a triage nurse and told to return to the waiting area, after another lengthy wait I was taken to a room where I was seen by another nurse and Dr, I was referred back to my GP after my scan was clear and told the hospital couldn't do anything for me.

I feel as though they didnt know what to do with me, perhaps my GP shouldn't have referred me, that is the impression I've been given, the staff were helpful, the nurse I saw did what she could and was friendly. The reason for my review is that I feel there is not great communication with regards to GPs referring patients, surely they should know what can and cannot be treated at A&E. As a result, I feel I wasted staff's time in A&E and now need to return to my GP for another appointment

Dear SandraL43

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of attending the Emergency Department at University Hospital Hairmyres, following a referral from your GP. I was pleased to note that whilst in the Emergency Department you found the staff to be friendly and helpful, however I note you did encounter some delays and would apologise for this. I will share your comments in relation to the staff in the ED with the team - thank you.

I note you feel that there should have been better communication from your GP around the reason for your attendance. I can advise that GP’s are independent contractors and are responsible for investigating and responding to any concerns a person may have about their service; they are not registered to respond directly to feedback through Care Opinion. I would therefore invite you to contact the Practice Manager if you would like a direct response about the service you experienced.

I hope you have now been able to consult with your GP and that you are now feeling better.

Lesley
