"Failure to liaise and update hospital records"

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital / General surgery Blackpool Victoria Hospital / Older people's healthcare Clifton Hospital

(as a relative),

My mother who is in her 80's was admitted to Blackpool Victoria for 3rd time in 3 years, a fiasco each time with inadequate care save for the nursing support staff who did their best.

A catalogue of inadequacy followed not least after Blackpool Vic she was sent, after repeated insistence by me to Clifton as she became immobile due to failure to get her out of bed for 7 weeks having previously lived alone with a reasonable mobility baseline. Over and above that a scan revealed gall stones which did not trouble her. After discussing with a consultant from the gastro dept it was decided to leave well alone as opposed to subjecting to a laser procedure which she would not have endured. Per chance during a discussion at Clifton hospital that I instigated one Sunday re her progress, I was informed she was being taken by ambulance the following morning at 8 am for the gallstone procedure which we had specifically decided against following a conference with the consultant, who seemingly had at best omitted to put on her notes. I could go on and on about the catalogue of repeated errors. It was a shambles and a repeated deeply distressing experience.

Thank you for writing about your mothers recent experience at both of our hospitals. I was sorry to read that your families personal wishes around your mothers procedure were not taken into account. There seems to have been a miscommunication between our staff and I would like to look into this further. Please can you contact my team directly at bfwh.complaints@nhs.net / 01253 95 5588, passing on your mothers name, date of birth and her hospital number if known. We will make contact with the services she received treatment in and provide you with a detailed explanation as to why the surgery went ahead, and the learning from this incident to ensure it does not happen again.

Many thanks

The surgery thankfully did not go ahead because I found out that it had been mistakenly scheduled on the Sunday as I had been informed she would be collected on the Monday at 8am from Clifton to Vic. It had never been meant to be taking place following consultation with the consultant gastroenterologist however it appears this was not on her re ores this is only one of a catalogue of errors - DNR inaccurate and consultant at hospital apologising and revoking etc etc. It is frankly a farce
