"Contraception"

About: Sexual Health / Contraception Service

(as a service user),

I have been getting the implant in my arm as a form of contraception for 10 years. Knowing the business of the NHS at the moment I phoned three months in advance of when I knew it was going to be changed. I have only just gotten a letter for a phone consultation, which I will be getting four months after I initially rang, and then who knows when my actual appointment will be. This is beyond a joke, by the time I get a phone consultation (I feel the only point of this being so that they can pretend they’ve actually done something to follow up), the implant will have sat in my arm for two months doing nothing. In the meantime, I will have to deal with excruciatingly painful periods, painful acne and other symptoms my implant helped manage. I appreciate the NHS has been under pressure but surely not the contraception end of it?! In my opinion, to have people waiting this long is simply ridiculous.

Hi @letdownuser, thank you for taking the time to send feedback and I am extremely sorry you are frustrated by nhs waiting times.

Due to the ongoing global pandemic all NHS services have been effected and unfortunately contraception services have not escaped these adverse effects. Like all out-patient services, we had a period of time when we could only run a very limited service and during this time all staff were re-deployed to other areas within the trust to help our colleagues with the unprecedented situation Covid has created. As a result we are currently running a much longer waiting list time than pre-pandemic and I do understand the frustrations this could cause to our patients. Please be assured all staff are doing everything we can to work efficiently through our waiting list.

Please also be assured your telephone consultation is an essential part of your overall assessment for having your implant replaced. Pre-covid this consultation would have been carried out at the start of your face to face appointment. Following the first part of your appointment by phone, we are usually able to offer a face to face appointment within 1-2 weeks of this.

I am extremely happy to hear your contraceptive implant has helped with some of the symptoms you have mentioned. However, if you find these are getting worse, you may also need to speak to your GP re this matter. If you could contact me via contraception@southerntrust.hscni.net I would be very happy to discuss all of the above with you.

Ann
