"Fantastic labour ward bad birth centre"

About: St Mary's Hospital

I was in labour at the end of September. I visited the birth centre twice. Once because my waters broke and they needed to check and was sent home and my notes said that fast and precipitous labours / births run in my family and to come back when I have contractions at 5 minutes apart.

I came back when I was 3 minutes apart and was told I was 2cm and to go home by the consultant midwife. I said no, due to my family history I am going to stay and I need painkillers or to stay here as the contractions were getting closer as I was sitting there. And told her I was told I would be allowed to stay and I have come back as per discussed with the midwives earlier that day. She refused to get me a bed and I said fine but now the pain is excruciating so can I have painkillers. She ignored my notes and tried to convince me not to and just to take codeine and go home. I still refused so she finally booked me into the labour ward.

I got up there 30 minutes after arrival at the hospital. And it transpired when I was there that I was then 8cm dilated. So as per my family I too had a fast labour.

I am disappointed that I was ignored when I came in that second time and the consultant midwife on the birth centre thought she knew better and refused to believe me.

I would use the labour ward again, they were fantastic. The care and the midwives and doctors and anaesthetist there were amazing. They made me feel safe and got me to labour and delivery so fast! Turns out I would have had to be there anyway as baby flipped and got stuck so needed instrumental help at the end. The team who worked helped deliver my baby there were great.

Thank you for your feedback. We were sorry to learn that your experience was not as positive as we would hope on the Birth Centre at Saint Mary’s Hospital on the Wythenshawe Campus. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity provided to the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible. Your concerns have been discussed with the Matron for the Community and Birth Centre who will share your negative experience with the Midwifery team and ask them to reflect on the importance of listening to our women and communicating more effectively with them at such a critical time. It is difficult to respond to all posts in a full way often because of a lack of detailed information, therefore if you would like to discuss your experience with us in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@mft.nhs.uk quoting reference number PO21/0091.

I would also like to thank you for your positive comments regarding the care you received on the labour ward. It was very kind of you to take the time to write and compliment the staff as it is good to receive positive feedback which reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff.

The Trust has introduced a behavioural framework within which all members of the midwifery and medical teams practice so it was reassuring to read that you found the midwifery staff caring, and supportive and that your experience throughout the delivery of your baby has been a positive one. I can assure you that we have passed on your feedback to Prof. Ed Johnstone, Clinical Head of Division for Obstetrics and Mrs Faith Sheils, Head of Midwifery who will be delighted to share your feedback with the staff involved.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish your family well for the future.

Mrs Alison Haughton

Acting Chief Executive Officer

Saint Mary’s Hospital Managed Clinical Services.
