"Not a nice experience"

About: University Hospital Aintree

I was brought to A and E yesterday by ambulance after consulting 111 and at My G P ‘s request

I had the most awful cough and chest pains

The 2 ambulance drivers were so lovely and waited till I checked in with reception

I was told to take a seat

Some time later the receptionist came to find me and told me I had to wait outside as there was a covid query even though I had 4 negative tests in the last 2 weeks

I couldn’t understand why I was put outside in a small area where the security man stood. No seating available and it was raining

I was so poorly I asked if this was correct procedure as there was other people standing g around. It was cold and had started to rain

After some time I happened to see the same ambulance lads who had brought me in sitting in their van

I asked them if this was right and did I have to wait outside ?

They said they’ve never heard of it snd both went back into A and E to get me a chair

I was then brought back in after at least a half hour wait

All the staff in A and E I dealt with were unfriendly in their manner and I was so poorly

I felt as though I was waistingtheir time and not one of them put me at ease

I was found somewhere on my own to sit in a separate seating area after complaining snd was given a cup of tea by a lovely cleaning lady

I eventually saw a doctor who also had no empathy and I left

Now I understand with covid there has to be certain measures in place but surely it’s not acceptable to ask someone brought in by ambulance to wait outside in the cold

Whole evpetience was truly awful

We are sorry to hear of your experience when attending the A&E Department recently; this does not meet the standards we aim to provide. Whilst our staff were trying to minimise the infection risk in what was a very busy Emergency Department, we would not normally ask patients to wait outside and we have taken steps to prevent this happening again. We will ensure that your experience is shared with staff for reflection and learning.

If you would like to discuss any aspects of the concerns you have raised please contact our Patient Advice and Complaints Team by emailing complaints@aintree.nhs.uk or by calling 0151 529 2400.
