About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital

At present, patients in A&E are not allowed to be accompanied or have visitors. Nurses and doctors are extremely busy so why not have an admin person to answer the phone to triage calls from next of kin, going out of their mind with worry. The phone is ringing out currently after 32 mins when I desperately want to find out what is happening. If I was allowed to be there I would know so please put something in place to help relatives.

Thank you for leaving this feedback. You raise a very good point here and I will share it with the Emergency Department Managers and staff in the Fylde Cost Medical Services, who provide administrative support into the Unit. This is something we need to review when we are experiencing an unprecedented number of patients accessing our Emergency Department. The staff are under tremendous pressure currently, and as a result of this are unable to respond as swiftly as they would like to. I hope you were able to get through to somebody to get the update you needed. If this happens again, I recommend you call the Hospital Switchboard on 01253 30000 and ask to speak to the matron on duty.

The visiting restrictions are in place to ensure everyone's safety with the current transmission rates of Covid-19. However, we are allowing one person to accompany or visit people seeking or receiving treatment in the Emergency Department if the patient has mental health needs, a cognitive impairment such as Dementia, or communication challenges such as a visual or hearing impairment. In addition, any child under the age of 18 can have one nominated parent or carer accompany them to the Emergency Department.

I hope your loved one is doing better now, and I will ensure your concern is passed on to our staff in Critical Care.

Kind regards

Eleanor Walsh

Head of Patient Experience
