"Inaccessibility to GP"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as the patient),

I required a fit note from my GP due to a family illness, my family member lives outside the Uk and I was trying to get there in a timely manner.

Trying to explain this timely situation was very difficult and was requested to phone back the next day to try to get an appointment.  This is a game of Russian roulette, if you are lucky enough to get through in time for an available appointment. They only way to escalate this is to write to your practise manager again not time sensitive.

I managed to get my fit note on time however not all employers will allow employees to spend time trying to get through to their GPS within working hours, this system does not encourage the public to seek medical a advice when needed. I can understand why someone would give up trying to get access to a GP with sensitive medical issues when it is so difficult.

The GP s are the gateway for a lot of services, I acknowledge the difficult work that has gone on in the pandemic as I am a health professional also however  I do believe that the GPS require to start to think of alternative ways to work as the current system is failing our health needs.

I have been a patient there for many years and always have received an excellent service.

Dear Medwin

Thank you for getting in touch via Care Opinion. I am sorry to read about the difficulties you experienced when trying to access a Fit Note. I hope you managed to visit your family member.

GP's are independent contractors with a separate feedback and complaints procedure, they are also not registered to respond directly to feedback through Care Opinion. Therefore, can I suggest contacting the Practice Manager to discuss your concerns your concerns. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, I can forward your feedback onto your GP surgery's practice manager on your behalf. If you could get in touch with me at PatientExperience@ggc.scot.nhs.uk with the name of the practice.

Kind Regards

Nicole
