When my daughter was born in May this year, it happened very quickly. Upon calling triage I was brushed off and told I would be fine and as it’s my first child I’d likely be in labour for a few hours if not days. Wrong. Labour for me from start to finish was around 4 hours. Upon arrival at the maternity unit I again was brushed off, not once was I actually checked by the midwife just told I should go for a walk or go home. When she finally let me into the room, my daughter was born not even 30 minutes later and she didn’t listen to me when I told her how I was feeling. I needed stitches after birth so I was taken to theatre to get these. After I got my stitches the spinal didn’t wear off as it was meant to and I was still partially numb 8 hours later and when asked to help me shower, one staff member said to another that if I don't want to get up and wash then just to leave me. Disgusting to say really considering I couldn’t walk and at no point did anyone attempt to get me on my feet.
I can’t fault the staff in the post natal ward who were so supportive and absolutely amazing. It’s just a pity this wasn’t my whole experience.
